Kit List

All Walkers must have the items below as a minimum and all will be checked and need to be in good condition and working order.

IMPORTANT: Failure to have all the minimum equipment will result in either the walker or the team’s ability to begin and take part in Six Summits Weekend.

Every WALKER must have the following:

Warm hat

Keep you warm. We often see cool days and very cold nights over the weekend.

Sun hat

We have experienced some very warm temperatures over the weekend with strong sun. Essential to help protect against sunstroke.

Gloves

For the cool evening and days out on the hills of Shropshire, essential kit for hiking in the terrain.

Waterproof Coat

Your coat needs to be waterproof and able to keep you dry all day, as there is no shelter out on the hills, and you should be prepared for the worst of weather. A good test is to stand in the shower with it on for a while and see if it leaks.

Waterproof Trousers

Keep your legs dry, especially on those wet, wild days out on the hills. Optionally, having a set of gaiters can help keep your lower legs and the top of your boots more protected.

Waterproof walking boots.

Keep your feet dry and help protect your ankles. Make sure that if you need or get new boots, you do so with plenty of time to get used to them and ready for the weekend. Good quality walking socks are key for good foot health.

Orange Survival Bag

You need to be prepared for anything, and we know that sometimes things don’t go to plan, with either weather or accidents. These bags will keep you or another casualty protected against the elements until rescue arrives.

Torch and Spare batteries

A torch with spare batteries is essential, not just for nighttime around camp but out on the hills, as it can be used to signal for help.

Plastic Whistle

Yes, it needs to be a plastic whistle, but why? We have seen extreme cold weather on the hills, and there is a risk that the metal whistle could freeze to your lips and be very painful to remove.

Sunscreen and Aftersun Cream

We have had to deal with sunburn out on the event, as the sun can be strong even at the beginning of May. We advise taking a high sunscreen factor. Aftersun to help cool the skin, if you have been a little slow applying sunscreen

High Viz Vest seen from the front

We spend as much time as possible on footpaths, but it is inevitable we need to walk along some roads, and you need to be seen from the front and back at all times.

High Viz seen from behind

We spend as much time as possible on footpaths, but it is inevitable we need to walk along some roads, and you need to be seen from the front and back at all times.

Rucksack

Training Event: this needs to be a minimum of a daysack that can carry all you need for the day, including minimum equipment.

Expedition Event: this needs to be able to carry all you need for three days, as you cannot have anything transported between campsites except your portable toilet.

Pencil and Paper

Why a pencil? Well, it works on paper even when wet. At times, you may need to write down critical information that can be at times easy to forget. make sure both are in a waterproof bag.

Food and Water

Training Event: you need to have all you need to eat for your day out hiking; we do have water out at checkpoints, but don’t travel too lightly. Recommend min 1-litre bottle of water.

Expedition Event: you need to have all the food you need for the three days, with, again, water out at checkpoints and at campsites. Recommend min 1-litre bottle of water.

Every TEAM must have the following:

Completed Route Card & Plan

Complete the route card and plan that will be sent 5-6 weeks before the event. The young people in the team must complete this as part of the challenge of the Six Summits.

Map Case

Map case to protect the maps and route card, as young people in the team are to navigate the route daily. A second map case is recommended so more than one person can help read the map to support the other map reader.

Small First Aid Kit

Suitable to handle a first aid incident while out hiking

Compeed or similar

We all get a blister at some point, and for those who know, plasters are not always the best option. Compeed or similar product is designed for blisters and hiking.

Mobile Phone

Able to call emergency services if ever needed and contact walk control if in difficulty. We also use a mobile phone at some unmanned checkpoints, where the team is to text to check-in. The team should ensure it is fully charged at the beginning of each day.

Two Ordnance Survey Maps sets (Map reference numbers to follow)

Each team is to have two complete map sets for the weekend to navigate the route. The second set is so that two can read maps at the same time or in case one set gets damaged or even lost.

Three Compasses (Silva or Suunto)

Compasses must be of suitable quality, with a base plate and be in full working order. Compasses found not to be in working order will not be counted towards the minimum of three per team.
