The Six Summits Challenge is returning with fresh updates for 2025. Usually, Explorers can only participate in the Expedition Event, and Scouts and Explorers cannot combine for the Training Event. We are changing the Training Event to create a more inclusive experience for Scouts and Explorers. These adjustments will make the event more accessible and enjoyable while providing targeted skill development tailored to each participant’s level. Changes are:
- Training Event: Scouts and Explorers in the same team
- Training Event: Exploers can now enter
Training Event: Scouts and Explorers in the same team!
For the first time, Scouts and Explorers can now team up based on their abilities rather than their age or section during the Training Event. This means young people with similar skill levels can walk together, creating well-balanced teams where everyone can make the most of their shared experience.
The new approach offers several benefits:
- Team members can learn from each other in mixed groups, with Leaders having more flexibility to organise groups based on ability level rather than age. This shared experience helps strengthen outdoor skills, teamwork and endurance as Scouts and Explorers tackle challenges side by side.
- By pairing young people of similar abilities, the change helps smooth the transition between Scouts and Explorers. It’s particularly helpful for older Scouts, who can get to know future Explorers peers before moving up to the next section. This way, they can continue developing their skills alongside others at a similar level, rather than being separated purely due to age.
Training Event: Explorers can now enter!
For 2025, there’s an exciting change to the Training Event – Explorers can now take part rather than being limited to the more demanding Expedition Event. Instead of carrying three days’ worth of kit, they’ll have the choice to join the Training Event with a lighter pack.
The new format brings two key advantages:
- Explorers can now focus on building their skills while carrying just a daysack, with Leaders moving their main kit between campsites. This means less physical strain, allowing them to concentrate on developing their hiking, navigation and stamina – perfect preparation for taking on the full Expedition Event in future.
- It’s a brilliant way for newer Explorers to build their confidence and experience. By starting with a more manageable challenge, they can get comfortable with the basics before moving on to the full expedition format. Think of it as a stepping stone towards the main event.
These exciting updates to the Six Summits Challenge Training Event will create a better experience for everyone involved. By focusing on ability rather than age, and making the event more accessible, the 2025 Challenge is shaping up to be an incredible opportunity for both Scouts and Explorers to build skills, develop resilience and forge new friendships.
